Thomas F. Thayer, 84, of Suffield, beloved husband of 60 years to Janet L. Thayer passed away on Thursday, May 14, 2026 at Hartford Hospital. Born June 22, 1941 in Hartford, son of the late Arthur and Pauline (Wohlgemuth) Thayer. Tom graduated from St. Michael’s College and started his career at IBM in Hartford where he met and later married his loving wife, Janet. Tom then joined ITT as a vice president of Human Resources and worked for many divisions moving a dozen times with his family and ending with his retirement at The Hartford Insurance Company.
He had a great gift of making people feel special. He talked to everyone even if he was just holding a door for someone. He made a 10 minute shopping trip turn into an hour even inviting someone home for coffee.
He enjoyed fishing and loved cruises with his family and loved the casino. Pretty lucky at the slots and always shared his winnings.
Tom was a true friend, a gentleman, kind, compassionate, and generous. He was the most loving, devoted husband, dad, and grandpa, always putting his family first. We will always love and miss you.
He is survived by his wife Jan (Skorka) Thayer; sons Greg and his wife, Erica of Winter Garden, FL, Brian of Suffield, CT. Dave and his wife, Melissa of Farmington; a daughter, Eileen Smith and her husband, Matt of Franklin, MA; six grandchildren, Lauren, Thomas, Katie, and Kristen Smith, Jackson and Brooke Thayer; two brothers, Larry and his wife, Beth, Paul and his wife, Donna; two sisters, Janet Thayer and Lois Hornyack and her husband, John; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two brothers, Arthur and Phillip Thayer.
A very special thanks to Dr. Kevin Dougherty for his extraordinary compassion and care. Also, Joanna Cahill, Julie and Denise of cardiology. In lieu of flowers please reach out to help someone in need.
