William T. Gauthier ’71

Died: November 1, 2022
Class of 1971

WILLIAM T. GAUTHIER, Hartford, CT, died November 1, 2022. Those who knew Bill fondly remember his sharp mind, natural curiosity, and affection for his grandchildren. Resourceful and dogged, he never lost his head when facing a problem. His passion for history led him first to Saint Michael’s and then to the University of Pennsylvania, where he received a master’s degree in American civilization. With the Vietnam war claiming lives of his generation, he entered the U.S. Army in officer training and was luckily able to avoid the war machine. He always questioned those in power and instilled in his family a wicked sense of humor and a penchant for challenging norms. He was deeply interested in genealogy and understanding the past in personal ways through his French-Canadian ancestors. A voracious reader, he surrounded himself with books, and his collection of history and politics volumes rivaled those of libraries. He is survived by his wife Irene, two children, five grandchildren, and extended family.
