Core Team Leader and Outdoor Volunteer Efforts

What involvement did/do you have with MOVE? What program did/do you volunteer with and/or lead? What years?
I was a core team leader for Outdoor Volunteer Efforts for two years (2017-2019); and I also volunteered with Cause for Paws and Cook N’ Food throughout my career at Saint Mike’s.

    What’s your MOVE story?
When I first volunteered with MOVE, I was a freshman looking to make friends and get off campus. MOVE was essential for establishing connections, exploring Chittenden County, and developing confidence in my leadership abilities.

First-Year Apple Picking was my first program. So many people say it, but it really did connect me with the folks who would become my closest friends at Saint Mike’s!

My journey with Outdoor Volunteer Efforts was about change and growth. During my first year volunteering, we helped break ground at the New Community Project’s Community Garden in Starksboro, and again at Saint Mike’s then-Permaculture Site, which grew to become the Farm at SMC under Kristyn Achilich’s thoughtful leadership. It was humbling and inspiring to watch communities blossom around (and unite over) fresh produce and hearty meals; and I am grateful to have been able to participate in the passion projects of wonderful people who enjoy getting their hands dirty.

In what ways did/does MOVE impact you?
MOVE connected me to people who value service and community, people who are some of the kindest, most inspiring souls I’ve met! Having met them has made me a more optimistic person.

If you are an alumni, what influence does MOVE continue to have on your life today?
To this day, I still value the time I spent in the MOVE office with Lara and Anna!

I also value that opportunities are made available to include alumni in service events through the alumni association. I haven’t had the chance to take advantage of those programs yet, due to the pandemic, but it’s nice to feel that the sense of community persists!
