Best Buddies, Service Trip Participant, and After School Games

What involvement did/do you have with MOVE? What program did/do you volunteer with and/or lead? What years?
I was a leader for Best Buddies, but I also volunteered on six Extended Services, Blood Drives, After School Programs, Senior Citizens, Habitat, Special Events, and what I think is now called FEED.

    What’s your MOVE story?
My path to MOVE began with enrollment in a Peace and Justice First-Year Seminar and never stopped. I quickly realized the power of being in community with others who uplifted the voices of our community, strived to address unmet needs, and collaborated with local change agents. In this reciprocal work I honed in on the values that I hold true to my core and guide my work today. I centered the mission of MOVE in all professional and personal relationships and will forever be thankful for the sense of community that being a member of MOVE gave to me. When I visit Vermont from Boston I am not only connected to SMC, but through my community engagement I feel connected to the city of Burlington. I currently serve as the Director of Community Service at another university and often reflect upon my time in MOVE at SMC in how I lead, train and support our community.

In what ways did/does MOVE impact you?
Understanding and embracing of differences, to help give voices to others, to understand my identity as I engage with others and the space and privilege that I take up as a white male. To make time to pause and reflect, learn and grow. The list goes on and on.

If you are an alumni, what influence does MOVE continue to have on your life today?
MOVE changed my life. I am currently the Director of Community Service at Brandeis University just outside of Boston (and have been for 13 years) and Ann Giombetti, former Director, was my mentor throughout my time at SMC. Now a dad of two, I center community engagement in all that we do and continue to stay active on boards and community efforts.
