Jerome Monachino, music minister for Edmundite Campus Ministry, this recent summer joined a group of top-level professional jazz musicians from the New York City scene who were up to campus as part of a workshop for working musicians, led by the acclaimed veteran Israeli-born jazz guitarist Roni Ben Hur. Workshop faculty gave concerts in the Recital Hall. A Vermont guitar-scene friend of Jerome’s knew him to be an accomplished jazz player who does regular local gigs beyond his ministry work as a guitarist, and so tipped him off about the workshop coming to St. Mike’s. Jerome signed up fast and joined about 35 other students who spent a week learning from six highly accomplished faculty.

Jerome Monachino, associate director of Edmundite Campus Ministry liturgical music at Saint Michael’s, wrote an essay that was selected for publication in the recent online and print edition of the national magazine U.S. Catholic that went live this past week, as part of a feature called “In The Pews.” Jerome’s reflection responded to the magazine’s inquiry: “What’s your favorite type of church music? What do you think of the state of liturgical music today?”
