Total solar eclipses are often a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and parts of Vermont get to witness the celestial phenomenon on April 8, 2024. So, why is this happening? And why are total solar eclipses so rare?

Saint Michael’s College Physics Professor and astrophysicist Alain Brizard will discuss the different types of eclipses and some of the history of their discovery. He will also focus on what to expect during the total solar eclipse on April 8, 2024 – especially during totality (when the face of the sun is covered by the moon and the solar corona becomes visible) – and how to view these events safely. These events could be especially spectacular this year because the sun is entering a phase of maximum activity. Professor Brizard will explain how that might affect what we see on April 8 as well.
