Education
major, minor
Are you inspired to make a difference in the lives of others? Have you ever considered classroom teaching? The Education Program provides you with the knowledge, skills, and dispositions you need to excel as a teacher.
At Saint Michael’s, you can major in:
- Elementary Education (Grades K-6)
- Secondary Education (Grades 7-12)
- Secondary Science Education (Grades 7-12)
Whichever major you choose, you’ll have a breadth of opportunities, materials, experiences, and professional mentoring which positions our program among the most highly regarded in the region. Our faculty incorporate a variety of approaches to teaching, learning, and assessment as a way to model best educational practices. Starting from your first year, the Education Program provides real-world experience in multiple classrooms serving diverse students. Your experiences in the schools will increase in both time and responsibilities, culminating with a semester of full-time student teaching.
Saint Michael’s College is updating its academic offerings to better align with evolving workforce needs and to enhance resource efficiency at St. Mike’s. These changes will strengthen the interdisciplinary learning and societal engagement already inherent in a Saint Michael’s education while staying true to our liberal arts vision and mission.
Beginning in Fall 2026
The Art Education major will no longer be offered for incoming students. Students may pursue Education and Art & Design as separate majors, together as a path to teaching licensure, or as a major and a minor.
The new Secondary Science Education major, a new educational pathway will be available in Fall 2026, which will fulfill requirements for secondary science education licensure and include credits across biology, chemistry, environmental science, and physics. More information about the curriculum will be shared soon.
Art Education Major Requirements
Elementary Education Major Requirements
Student teaching provides elementary, middle, and secondary education majors who are earning an education degree or license with the opportunity to design, implement, and evaluate instruction under the direct supervision of a licensed teacher. This internship is the equivalent of three full courses.
Along with working in the schools, student teachers take the Student Teaching Seminar. The class examines issues raised through the student teaching experience, supports the construction of the professional portfolio required for Vermont teacher licensure, and bridges the transition from student teacher to professional practitioner. As a community of learners we address the themes of creativity, curiosity, contemplation, collaboration, reflection, and social justice through topics such as student diversity, classroom management and culture, standards-based lesson and unit planning, instructional strategies, and assessment. We develop skills together to successfully enter the teaching profession and create a professional development trajectory.
Art Licensure
Students interested in earning a license to teach Art PK-12 will be eligible to do so by pursuing a double major in Art & Design and Education Studies.
Education Studies
Students interested in studying education more broadly in settings beyond PK-12 classrooms and those not seeking teacher licensure as an undergraduate may pursue the Education Studies major.
Many of our graduates go on to pursue a Master of Arts in Teaching through our 4+1 program here at Saint Michael’s. Others have pursued advanced degrees at institutions like: Columbia University, University of Michigan, Vanderbilt University.
