Fr. Tom Hoar ’73

Our first award winner this morning is not only a Golden Knight, he’s been an Edmundite for 45 years. That combination probably gets you into heaven twice as fast! It’s a pleasure to recognize Fr. Tom Hoar, Class of 1973, as an Alumnus of the Year. Father Tom wasn’t able to join us today, but he was presented with his award at the Golden Knights dinner last night, and received a rowdy ovation, as you can imagine!

Since his own graduation from St. Michael’s, Fr. Tom has spent the last half century in constant service to others. As an Edmundite father, he has held leadership positions in higher education, spiritual renewal, addiction recovery, human formation, and religious ministries.

He consistently volunteers on various local boards and ministries, and has led retreats, missions, and pilgrimages throughout his entire career. Most notably, Fr. Tom serves as President and CEO of St. Edmund’s Retreat, on Enders Island, CT, which houses a live-in addiction treatment center for young men, recovery retreats, a sabbatical program, art classes, lectures, and community outreach. He also currently serves on the Saint Michael’s Board of Trustees, a position he has held several times before.

Fr. Tom has hosted countless alumni events at Enders Island over the years and participates in the Alumni Phone-a-thon program. Fr. Tom is frequently recognized for his ongoing service to the Saint Michael’s community and has received the Alumni Association Award and the Student Association Community Service Award – twice!

The community of Saint Michael’s College is continually grateful for Fr. Tom’s lifetime of generous leadership, volunteerism, and focus on service over self. Like our other Alumni of the Year, Fr. Tom lives out the Saint Michael’s vision, Do Well and Do Good, every day.

The Alumni Association Board of Directors is very proud to name Fr. Tom Hoar a 2023 Alumnus of the Year.
