Emergency Management
Emergency Management protects communities by coordinating and integrating all activities necessary to build, sustain, and improve the capability to mitigate against, prepare for, respond to, and recover from threatened or actual natural disasters, acts of terrorism, or other man-made disasters.
Saint Michael’s offers a way for every person to learn how to help in an emergency situation. The College offers high-level training and certification opportunities – including the chance to earn an Emergency Management Certificate – through a blended learning curriculum that also allows students to earn a FEMA Professional Development Series certification.
About
The Emergency Management program is a four-course certification process to help anyone learn how to operate during a crisis while also earning a Saint Michael’s College Certification, a Federal Emergency Management Agency: Professional Development Series certification and meet the academic requirements of the Vermont EMD certificate.
Curriculum
Emergency Management 101 (2 credits): Fundamentals of Emergency Management and command systems including the Vermont Local Emergency Management Director’s course, Red Cross shelters and other federal and state courses.
Emergency Management 102 (2 credits): This course builds on EM principles, discusses government and community relations and public information, hazard assessment and culminates in a nationally recognized program in emergency management exercise evaluation and control.
Emergency Management 201 (2 credits): This Independent Study engages the student to work and research the intersection of emergency management and their major or area of study. Work and deliverables will be determined and evaluated by the EM program coordinator and an appropriate professor in the academic area.
Emergency Management 210 (2 credits): As a team students will conduct a needs assessment for an emergency exercise, assess emergency plans and resources, develop, conduct and evaluate a functional or full scale exercise according to Homeland Security (HSEEP) standards.
