SOAR Pre-Orientation Program
Join us for SOAR!
August 21 – 25 for incoming Fall 2026 students
We want to make your transition to college as seamless as possible. St. Mike’s offers a special extension to the regular orientation program for incoming students from specific populations. Activities are designed to help these students integrate into the community and connect them to resources and people who will support them during their time at St. Mike’s.
The program is offered free of charge. A limited number of spots are available – in total, 30 – to keep programming personalized. Family and/or guardians are welcome to join during the first day’s activities, which include helping the student move in.
Who is eligible
If you self-identify as any of the following: a person of color, first generation college student, international student, a student coming from a modest income background, or a student with a disability, then you may be eligible to attend SOAR.
What is SOAR
SOAR is a pre-orientation program that takes place in the days leading up to regular orientation for incoming students. SOAR participants have the benefit of moving in at the beginning of the program – days before other students arrive – and to participate in informative and social activities designed specifically for them. They will get to know incoming students from similar backgrounds, become familiar with the Center for Student Diversity, Empowerment, and Community (DEC) and affiliated groups, as well as how to access a whole host of Student Life resources. Social events and mini-trips help them navigate campus and appreciate what the greater Burlington, VT area has to offer. Many participants form valuable friendships and connections with faculty and staff mentors during SOAR.

“This program helped me to be more comfortable and confident with myself, so I think this program is very helpful for people who [are] nervous or scared of going to college. Now I feel ready to start classes and enjoy every second at the college.”
[SOAR] made college feel more approachable and made the transition feel gradual.
