Service Trips

*MOVE is reestablishing our Service Trip offerings for the 2021-2022 academic year to take into account the safety of our students and community partners as the COVID-19 pandemic continues to evolve. Please email for more information.

Saint Michael’s College Service Trips are one of the first Alternative Break Programs offered in the United States. Edmundite Father Steve Hornat created the program in 1986 while working in the Office of Campus Ministry. That first year, Fr. Steve traveled with five students to New York City’s Covenant House to do service work over Spring Break. This experience brought with it the opportunity to see life outside what is known and what is comfortable: to sit with others; to actively work beside another; to learn, to witness, and to participate. We have since then expanded to thirteen service sites across the country, and world, offering a variety of opportunities to engage in service and stand for justice.

MOVE Service Trip Program Mission

To increase the awareness of global issues while inspiring local service.  The Service Trip Committee stresses the importance of group dynamics to create a safe environment which encourages and enables honest discussion and motivates individuals to work in collaboration towards a common goal.  It is our hope that participants will be instilled with sensitivity and respect for new cultures and populations as well as a continued passion for advocating for social justice upon return.

Update for the 2021-2022 Academic Year

It is with great excitement that we announce that the MOVE Service Trip Program is returning this year! Although the COVID-19 pandemic continues to pose obstacles for our campus, surrounding communities, and community partners across the nation, MOVE is committed to offering up to six domestic service trips this academic year, with the safety of our students and community partners as our first and foremost priority. With this in mind, the status of our trips is subject to change as the COVID-19 pandemic continues to evolve.

MOVE will be hosting Service Trip Informational Sessions on 9/22 and 9/23 from 7-8PM in the Roy Room of Dion Student Center for anyone interested in learning more about each trip. Student participant applications as well as faculty/staff leader applications will be accessible beginning at 8PM on 9/23 and are open until 11:59PM on 10/20.
