Individual sessions (30 or 50 minutes) may be arranged by students who would benefit from support, help with problem-solving, a neutral and confidential space, short-term therapy, and/or crisis management. Same day counseling sessions are also available Monday through Friday from 11 am – 12 noon, and 1 – 4pm.
If four or more students are interested, a support group can be created. Past support groups have included the following topics: Grief and Loss, Learning Differences, LGBTQ, Positive Body Image, Sexual Assault Survivors, Stress and Anxiety, and Adult Children of Alcoholics.
Part-time students, graduate students, staff and faculty are invited to meet on a consulting basis to discuss their concerns about a student or colleague, or to discuss their own interest in community resources.
The counseling staff provides crisis intervention services for the undergraduate, full-time student population. This service is provided in conjunction with the Student Life Office. See the section on Crisis Services for more information.
Off Campus Referrals
The counseling staff will offer services within our scope of practice. For therapeutic needs that fall outside of that scope of practice, referrals will be made to off-campus providers. You can check out some local off-campus providers through this link to Thriving Campus: smcvt.thrivingcampus.com.
Student Support Network
The SSN is a training program designed to give students the skills needed to identify, support, and refer peers who may be struggling with personal issues. Participants learn to recognize the signs and symptoms of mental health distress and alcohol and other drug abuse, and become more confident in reaching out and supporting friends and peers. The training consists of six mandatory sessions of 1 hour and 15 minutes each week. For more information, please email Catherine Welch at email@example.com or call 802.654.2271.
In addition, Active Minds is a student-run mental health awareness organization on campus. Find out more on the student organizations community page.
Training and Education
The counseling staff provides assistance to other offices and student groups through in-service trainings and educational workshops and presentations as they are needed and depending on counselor availability.
