Jesse Anderson ‘21

Saint Michael’s College proudly recognizes Jessie Anderson ’21 as Young Alumna of the Year, honoring her inspiring journey, her emerging leadership in human resources, and her unwavering commitment to creating inclusive communities where all people can thrive.

Jessie’s story is a powerful testament to resilience, belonging, and the life-changing impact of education. Born during a civil war and raised in a refugee camp, she came to the United
States as a first-generation college student. At Saint Michael’s, she found not only an education, but also a community of mentors, peers, and supporters who helped shape her path and affirmed her place within it. That experience continues to guide her work and her commitment to ensuring others feel seen, valued, and supported.

After graduating from Saint Michael’s with a degree in psychology, Jessie earned her master’s degree in Organizational Development and Human Resources from Champlain College. Today, she serves as a Human Resources Generalist and Employee Wellness Lead for the City of Burlington, supporting more than 700 employees across operations, benefits, engagement, and wellness programming. In this role, she has led impactful initiatives—including a $100,000 employee wellness program—that prioritize holistic well-being and foster positive, inclusive workplace cultures.

Jessie approaches human resources not simply as a profession, but as a platform for meaningful change. She is deeply committed to building equitable systems and practices that empower individuals to succeed, advocating for inclusive hiring, compassionate policies, and workplace cultures rooted in respect and belonging. Her work has earned growing recognition, including being named a VermontBiz Rising Star in 2024 and recognition by Marquis Who’s Who for excellence in human resources.

Beyond her professional accomplishments, Jessie is deeply engaged in service and advocacy. She serves on the boards of the Vermont Natural Resources Council and Conscious Homestead, an urban learning community centered on Black and Brown voices. She is also a certified Empowerment Self Defense instructor, leading programs that promote safety, confidence, and agency for girls, and supports education and empowerment initiatives for girls in Liberia.

Throughout all of her work, Jessie remains guided by the values she cultivated at Saint Michael’s—community, compassion, justice, and a belief in the dignity and potential of every person. She exemplifies what it means to “pay forward” the support she once received, creating pathways for others and reminding those around her of a simple and powerful truth: you belong. Jessie frequently returns to St. Mike’s to participate in Alumni
and Career Education events, most recently representing the City of Burlington at the 2026 Career Symposium.

Jessie Anderson’s story is an inspiring reflection of the Saint Michael’s mission in action, and her impact—both now and in the years ahead—makes her a most deserving recipient of the Young Alumna of the Year Award.
